AI Can Now Predict Waiting Time and Gas Leaks

The Hong Kong startup C&R Wise AI that supplied AI technology to precisely count the number of street protesters within the city can be helping universities and railway operators better manage their crowds as private companies and the government within the former British colony step up their use of artificial intelligence.

The City University of Hong Kong is deploying the corporate’s EdgeAI system, which runs algorithms on an industrial computer to process photographs of individuals and objects, to count the number of college students and lecturers on campus to provide insights into crowd flow at main entrances and exits, based on Raymond Wong, C&R’s founder and managing director.

The technology is used within the city’s subway stations to supply an estimate of passenger waiting times throughout peak hours, whereas local gas corporations deploy the AI system to detect entries to remote sites in addition to leaks or rust on gas pipes that need repair.

Wong, a graduate of the University of Hong Kong with a bachelor and master’s degree in laptop engineering and computer science, began C&R in 2009 as a software growth firm for public organizations and international manufacturers, however soon saw the increasing potential within the application of AI. He started the AI branch two years ago to concentrate on utilizing perception-based AI technology to assist businesses to detect people and various objects.

The focus on C&R comes amid town’s increasing adoption of AI in companies and public organizations as the government continues to encourage innovation and build a world-class smart city in mobility, living, environment, public service, and other fields.
